Angela Betzien

Angela Betzien is a multi award winning writer and a founding member of independent theatre company Real TV.

The Dark Room, produced by Belvoir, won the 2011 Sydney Theatre Award for Best New Australian work and was also nominated for several other awards including Best Mainstage Production and Best Direction of a Mainstage production.

Angela’s Hoods, commissioned by Sydney Opera House: Ed and Regional Arts Victoria, is her most successful play to date. The play premiered at the Sydney Opera House in 2006 and has toured extensively throughout Australia. Hoods toured internationally to Cortile Theatre Im Hof, Italy and Dschungel Wien Theaterhaus, Austria in 2010.

In 2010 Angela received an Australia Council grant to develop her new play for children The Very True and Unusual Life of Chook at the New Visions/New Voices Festival in Washington, U.S.A. This work was nominated for a 2010 Kit Denton Fellowship for Courageous Writing. Children of the Black Skirt toured Australian schools for three years from 2003 to 2005. The play was also included as part of the Come Out Youth Arts Festival in Adelaide in 2005 and was the winner of the 2005 Drama Victoria Award for Best Performance by a Theatre Company for Secondary Schools.

Angela’s other plays include Girl Who Cried Wolf, commissioned by Sydney Opera House:Ed and Arena Theatre; The Teenage Alchemist commissioned by ATYP and Camp Quality; Dog Wins Lotto, Playboy of the Working Class and The Orphanage Project (all Queensland Theatre Company); The Kingswood Kids (La Boite Theatre); The Suitcase (Real TV & Stage X) and Princess of Suburbia (Real TV).
