Avid Reader: 193 Boundary Road, West End, Brisbane.

Following the exciting Brisbane Festival celebrations this July, Avid Reader will light up the stage with a special one night only event to celebrate the diverse talents of Brisbane’s independent theatre scene on Wednesday 23 July 2008.

Presented in conjunction with Playlab Press, the night will feature our new collection of local plays titled Independent Brisbane.

Independent Brisbane represents what is characteristic of the city the plays originate – a preoccupation with landscape; creation in tightly knit collaborative teams; and brave, often unexpected theatrical choices.

Brisbane playwrights Maxine Mellor and Linda Hassall will provide insight into the inspiration behind their Independent Brisbane plays, and discuss the bubbling melting pot of Brisbane’s underground theatre scene.

And - a live performance from one of the plays will also feature on the night!

Winner of the 2004 QTC George Landen Dann Award, Maxine Mellor’s moving play about adolescence Magda’s Fascination with Wax Cats has been described by the Griffith Review as “poetic and unpleasant, sensual – a play for escapists, curious cats and anyone who's ever run away with their imagination until reality catches up.”

A past theatre critic for The Australian, Linda Hassall is the co-founder of independent theatre company Dogs On The Roof. Her Independent Brisbane play Post Office Rose tells the tale of three women who reunite 15 years after forming a Patsy Cline covers band at their local pub. Australian Stage Online has acclaimed Linda’s play as “a heartbreakingly beautiful story that takes you on a journey where the only possible destination is the past.”

Playlab’s Executive Director Kathryn Kelly said the Avid Reader event highlights the undoubtable surge of creativity and talent emerging from Brisbane’s Independent theatre scene.
“Independent theatre in Brisbane is a vibrant hub of activity which boasts a talented mix of playwrights whose scripts are raw, confronting and illuminating.”

“In celebrating our beautiful city, we must also remember the local creatives who make Brisbane stand out from the crowd.” Ms Kelly said.

Copies of Independent Brisbane will be available for purchase from Avid Reader on the night, or visit Playlab's online catalogue to order your copy online.

** PLAYLAB PRESS PLAYWRIGHT NOMINATED FOR AWGIE! **

Born and bred Tasmanian playwright Tom Holloway has been nominated for the prestigious Australian Writers Guild Award, the AWGIE, for his unforgettable and touching play Beyond the Neck. Published by Playlab Press, Toms haunting play follows the aftermath of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.

Aged 17 at the time of the tragedy, Tom was so profoundly affected by the event that he was moved to write Beyond the Neck. Based on in-depth-interviews, the story is set ten years later and explores the power of community and recovery.

'This is such an important story and I think it is really important that is being told,' Tom has said of his work.

Nominated for the Stage category for the AWGIEs, Beyond The Neck was also one of five plays short-listed from over four hundred entries for presentation at the Royal Court Theatre London in 2007.

Leo Butler of the Royal Court Theatre has praised Beyond the Neck calling it a 'remarkable play': 'Tom is an authentic, original and exciting new playwright.'

The winners of the AWGIEs will be announced at the Plaza Ballroom, Melbourne on Friday 15 August 2008.

Copies of Beyond the Neck are currently available for $19.95 from Playlab Press. Click here to access the catalogue: [read more] or phone us on +61 7 3220 0841 to order.
